When it comes to keeping your shoes in pristine condition, the right cleaning approach can make all the difference. From sneakers to suede, each material requires specific care to maintain its look and longevity. Here at Sweep, we not only focus on keeping your home spotless but also offer guidance to help keep yourself and your home looking it’s best. Here are some shoe cleaning tips and tricks for a variety of shoe types:
I recently just cleaned a couple pairs of my own sneakers, and I used a product called “SneakErasers.” These erasers combine a magic eraser (probably my favorite way to clean shoes) and a sponge pad (which picks up those little pieces the magic eraser leaves behind). All I did was remove the laces, wet the sponge with warm water, and wiped all of the surfaces on the shoe. I do this method for all of my shoes regularly, and it has literally saved years on the life of my shoes. It’s not perfect, but it will definitely freshen up your kicks!
For deeper cleans, consider using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to tackle tougher stains. Apply the paste, scrub gently with a brush, and wipe away for a fresh look. I’d consider this a last resort on saving your shoes. If this doesn’t do it, it’s probably time for some new ones!
Leather requires a bit more care to maintain its quality. Use a soft cloth and specialized leather cleaner to remove dirt and grime. After cleaning, applying a leather conditioner is crucial; it keeps the leather soft and prevents cracks. For scuffs, a matching leather cream can help restore the shoe’s original luster.
Suede and nubuck are notoriously tricky to clean due to their soft, delicate nature. Use a dry suede brush to gently lift dirt and restore the nap. For stains, a suede eraser can work wonders. Avoid using water, as it can cause staining and further damage to suede.
Canvas is relatively easy to clean. A simple solution of warm water and mild detergent works well. Use a soft brush or cloth to scrub the canvas gently, then rinse with clean water and let air dry. Avoid using the washing machine as it can warp the shape of the shoes.
For shoes that see a lot of action, remove excess dirt with a brush or cloth first. Mix a solution of warm water and sport detergent, designed specifically for performance fabrics, and use a soft brush to clean the material. This helps remove odor and stains without degrading the shoe’s performance features.
For quick cleanup I recommend the magic eraser method on the soles of your shoes. I wouldn’t recommend using this on any mesh/cloth areas though.
Using the right products and techniques can extend the life of your shoes, keeping them looking new for years to come. Just like a clean home, clean shoes can make all the difference in how you feel and how you present yourself to the world.
